Garrion Bridges Mural – A Splash of Colour in the Clyde Valley

Created in 2021, the Garrion Bridges Mural at the Garrion Bridges Garden and Antique Centre became one of my most ambitious public art projects to date. What initially began as a relatively small idea quickly evolved into a monumental piece measuring an impressive 25 metres by 4 metres.

The mural was created using spray paint, allowing for bold movements, vibrant colour transitions and expressive mark-making across the vast surface. The colour palette was deliberately chosen to bring warmth, energy and a contemporary feel to the location. Rich and vivid purples form the foundation of the piece, contrasted beautifully with Naples Yellow, Raw Sienna and earthy Ochres, creating a striking interplay between cool and warm tones.

Inspired by the surrounding landscape and atmosphere of the Clyde Valley, the mural was designed to complement its setting while introducing a dramatic burst of colour and creativity. The sweeping forms and layered textures encourage viewers to discover new details each time they visit, with the artwork changing subtly depending on the light and the seasons.

Working on such a large scale presented both challenges and opportunities. The sheer size of the mural allowed for a freedom of expression that is difficult to achieve on canvas, transforming the wall into an immersive piece of public art. What started as a modest commission ultimately became a landmark artwork, drawing attention from visitors to the garden centre and antique centre alike.

The Garrion Bridges Mural remains a project that I look back on with great pride. It represents the power of allowing creative ideas to grow beyond their original intentions and demonstrates how large-scale public art can enhance a space, creating a memorable visual experience for everyone who encounters it.
