Photography Class Trip to Kirkintilloch Canal
There’s something special about stepping outside the classroom and taking creativity into the real world, and that’s exactly what we did recently with our Photography Class on a day trip to the beautiful canal paths of Kirkintilloch.
Armed with cameras, enthusiasm, and a shared love of capturing the world around us, we spent the day exploring one of Scotland’s hidden gems. Kirkintilloch, often referred to as the “Canal Capital of Scotland,” gave us the perfect setting to slow down, observe, and really think about composition, light, and storytelling through photography.
One of the wonderful things about photography is learning to see differently. It’s not always about the obvious shot – sometimes it’s the reflection dancing on the water, the textures in an old canal lock, the contrast between nature and industry, or simply the way sunlight cuts through the trees at just the right moment.
Throughout the day, we focused on experimenting with perspective, framing techniques, and how changing your position by just a few steps can completely transform an image. It was fantastic to watch everyone approach the same location differently, each person bringing their own eye and creativity to the experience.
Trips like this are such an important part of learning. While classroom sessions help build technical knowledge, being outdoors challenges you to react, adapt, and trust your own artistic instincts. It also reminds us that inspiration can be found anywhere when we take the time to really look.
Most importantly, it was a brilliant day of shared creativity, conversation, and encouragement. Seeing confidence grow as students began spotting compositions on their own and experimenting more freely was incredibly rewarding.
Photography, like all art, is about connection – connecting with your surroundings, with your subject, and with the story you want to tell.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable day. I’m already looking forward to our next creative adventure together.
Keep looking, keep creating, and never stop seeing the beauty in the world around you.
