A Flying Visit to Dumfries & Galloway
From Wedding Caricatures to Carrick Bay
Some trips combine work, creativity and a chance to explore somewhere new, and my recent journey down to Dumfries & Galloway was definitely one of those days.
The main reason for the trip was a very special one – I was heading to the beautiful Ernespie Hotel to provide live cartoons and caricatures for Vikki and Logan’s wedding.
There’s something I particularly enjoy about drawing at weddings. Every celebration has its own atmosphere, and being able to capture guests in a fun and unique way gives everyone a little keepsake from the day. It’s always great seeing the reactions when people see their caricature for the first time, and I was delighted to be part of Vikki and Logan’s special day.
Once the wedding drawings were finished, it was time to head off and make the most of being in such a beautiful part of the country.
My next stop was Carrick Bay, where I took a quick wander to soak up the scenery and have a look at the fascinating standing stones. It was one of those brief stops that makes you wish you had more time. The combination of coastline, history and landscape provided plenty of inspiration, and as an artist, I’m always looking at the colours, shapes and atmosphere around me.
From Carrick Bay, the journey continued towards Kirkcudbright – the Artist Town.
Kirkcudbright has a fantastic artistic heritage, so naturally it was somewhere I wanted to visit. Although this was only a flying visit, it was great to get a taste of the town, wander around and take in some of the creative atmosphere.
It was a relatively short visit, but it packed a lot into the day – from drawing wedding guests at Ernespie, to exploring the landscape around Carrick Bay and finishing in one of Scotland’s best-known artistic towns.
It’s another reminder that one of the great things about being an artist is that inspiration can turn up almost anywhere. A wedding, a coastline, standing stones or an artist’s town can all provide something to take back to the studio.
And, of course, there’s always the possibility that one of those moments will eventually become a painting, drawing or photograph!
Another wedding, another adventure and another little bit of Scotland explored.
