For most of my creative life, people have known me primarily as a painter — creating bold, vibrant artworks filled with colour, energy, and emotion. From landscapes and portraits to murals, exhibitions, and commissioned pieces, art has always been my way of interpreting the world around me.

But creativity rarely stays in one place.

Alongside painting, another passion has quietly been evolving over the years —Photography.

Today, I’m excited to introduce Neil G Smith Photography, a new creative space dedicated to capturing the world through a different lens and exploring what I believe is one of the purest forms of visual storytelling: the art of photography.

Photography Is More Than Taking Pictures

In a world where everyone carries a camera in their pocket, photography is often seen simply as the act of pressing a button.

But true photography is so much more than that.

Photography is about observation. It is about patience, timing, composition, light, and the ability to notice beauty in places that others might overlook. A single photograph can freeze emotion, preserve history, capture atmosphere, and tell stories without saying a single word.

Much like painting, photography is an art form built on vision.

The camera simply becomes the tool.

What has always drawn me to photography is its honesty.

Sometimes the most powerful images are not grand landscapes or dramatic moments, but the quiet details that often pass unnoticed — changing light over the sea, the texture of old architecture, reflections dancing across water, movement in a busy street, or a fleeting expression that disappears seconds later.

Photography teaches us to slow down and look closer.

It reminds us that beauty exists everywhere.

An Artist’s Eye Behind the Camera

As someone who has spent decades painting, I naturally approach photography differently.

I don’t simply look for a subject — I look for composition, colour relationships, balance, atmosphere, and emotion. The same principles I use when creating paintings influence every photograph I take.

In many ways, photography and painting are deeply connected.

One uses a brush.
The other uses light.
Both begin with seeing.
