Seeing Newcastle Through My Lens

As an artist, I’ve always believed that creativity doesn’t begin and end with a paintbrush. Sometimes inspiration comes through a camera lens — in those fleeting moments where light, colour, architecture, and atmosphere all come together to tell a story. My recent photographic journey through Newcastle reminded me exactly why I love capturing the world around me.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a city bursting with character. It has that wonderful balance of industrial heritage, modern architecture, vibrant culture, and a sense of energy that feels alive on every street corner. Walking through the city with my camera gave me the chance to experience Newcastle in a completely different way — not simply as a visitor, but as an observer searching for those moments that often go unnoticed.

One of the things that immediately stood out was the incredible architecture. From the iconic curves of the Tyne Bridge stretching proudly across the river, to the historic beauty of Grey Street with its stunning Georgian buildings, the city offers endless visual inspiration. I found myself drawn to the contrast between old and new — the stories held in weathered stone sitting comfortably alongside contemporary glass and steel.

Photography allows me to slow down and notice details I might otherwise miss. Reflections dancing across the River Tyne, the movement of people rushing through the city centre, dramatic skies shifting above historic landmarks — these are the moments I’m always searching for.

Much like painting, photography is about composition, emotion, and perspective. It’s about deciding what deserves attention and framing the world in a way that invites others to see something familiar from a completely different angle. Newcastle gave me countless opportunities to do exactly that.

What I love most about photography is how it informs my painting practice. Every image I capture becomes part of a bigger creative process. Colours, textures, shadows, and urban energy often find their way into future artworks, influencing how I approach canvas and composition. The camera becomes another creative tool — another way of interpreting the world.

This collection of photographs from Newcastle isn’t simply about documenting a place. It’s about celebrating the beauty that exists in everyday surroundings and reminding ourselves that inspiration can be found anywhere when we take the time to really look.

Newcastle offered character, history, movement, and atmosphere in abundance — and I’m excited to share the images I captured during my time there.
