Discovering the Wild Coast of Cascais
One of the highlights of our time in Portugal was a wonderful coastal walk from Cascais to some of the area's most famous landmarks, all under glorious sunshine and with the Atlantic providing a constant dramatic backdrop.
Our first stop was the spectacular Boca do Inferno, or "Hell's Mouth." This natural sea arch and cave is one of Cascais' most visited attractions and it's easy to see why. The sheer power of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display here as waves crash into the rocky chasm below, sending sprays of water high into the air. The rugged cliffs and deep blue sea make this a fantastic spot for photography and simply taking in the raw beauty of Portugal's coastline.
From there, we continued along the scenic coastal path towards Casa da Guia. This charming former manor house has been transformed into a delightful collection of cafés, restaurants and boutique shops, all set within beautiful gardens overlooking the ocean. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning sea views make it the perfect place to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Our final destination was the iconic Guia Lighthouse (Farol da Guia). Standing proudly on the headland, the lighthouse has guided ships along this stretch of coastline since the 19th century. The surrounding views are simply breathtaking, with endless Atlantic vistas stretching towards the horizon. As the sun illuminated the white lighthouse and rugged coastline, it provided a perfect ending to our walk.
After working up an appetite, we stopped for lunch at Palaphita Cascais. Hidden amongst the trees, this unique restaurant offers a wonderfully relaxed and almost tropical atmosphere. Enjoying delicious food while surrounded by nature and listening to the distant sound of the ocean made for a memorable dining experience and a welcome break during our walk.
This route showcases everything that makes Cascais such a special destination – dramatic coastal scenery, fascinating landmarks, hidden gems and fantastic places to eat and relax. Whether you're a photographer, nature lover or simply looking for a leisurely stroll by the sea, this beautiful walk along Portugal's Atlantic coast is an experience not to be missed.
