Arttoon on the Road
From the Studio Gallery to Moffat & Penrith Comic Con
It’s been another busy week of art, Comic Cons, travelling and plenty of drawing, so I thought I’d put together a video taking you along for the journey — starting at my Studio Gallery before heading out on the road to Moffat and Penrith.
A Look Around the Studio Gallery
The video begins at my Studio Gallery, where I take you on a tour of some of the artwork currently on display.
There’s a real mixture of styles and subjects, including my Rock Legends paintings featuring artists such as Prince, Kurt Cobain and Bob Marley. These are just a few of the musicians who have inspired my artwork over the years, and it’s always great to see the collection together in the studio.
Alongside the music-inspired work, there is also a selection of my landscape paintings, featuring locations from both near and far. Among them are paintings inspired by Times Square in New York and the dramatic Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye, as well as a number of other landscapes.
One of the things I enjoy most about having a studio gallery is being able to bring together very different parts of my artwork. From bold Rock Legends paintings and fan art to landscapes and more traditional pieces, there’s hopefully something to catch everyone's eye.
Moffat Comic Con
After the studio tour, it was time to hit the road and head to Moffat Comic Con.
For this event I decided to try something a little different with my display. I introduced a new presentation format for my prints, giving the artwork a fresh look and making it easier for visitors to browse the different designs.
Comic Cons are always a great opportunity to meet people who appreciate artwork inspired by film, television, music, comics and popular culture. They also give me the chance to showcase work that people might not otherwise get to see in person.
Trying out a new way of presenting the prints was also an interesting experiment, and it's always useful to see how a different display works in a busy event environment.
A Trip to Penrith
From Moffat, the journey continued south to Penrith.
Before heading into the Comic Con, I took the opportunity to have a walk through the town and have a look around the new square. It’s always nice to explore somewhere before an event rather than simply arriving, setting up and heading straight home afterwards.
Then it was time to head to Penrith Comic Con and get everything set up for another busy day.
As well as having my selection of prints on display, I was also doing what I love at these events — drawing caricatures.
There’s something completely different about drawing someone live. You never quite know who is going to sit down in front of you, and every caricature brings its own challenge. It’s also great seeing the reaction when someone sees their finished drawing for the first time.
Art, Prints, Caricatures and More
One of the best things about doing Comic Cons and art events is the variety. One weekend I can be working in the studio on paintings, the next I can be travelling somewhere new with a display of prints, and then spending the day drawing caricatures for visitors.
It’s all part of being an artist and, for me, that variety is what keeps things interesting.
