From Lens to Line
From Lens to Line brings together several different sides of my creative world — photography, fine art and illustration. While much of the exhibition focuses on my palette knife paintings and photography, illustration has always been an important part of what I do.
Under my Arttoon name, I create illustrations that are often fun, colourful, quirky and sometimes a little bit different. From cartoons and caricatures to fan art, characters and completely original ideas, illustration gives me the freedom to explore stories and subjects in a way that photography and fine art simply can't.
For me, illustration is about more than just drawing a picture. It's about taking an idea, a character or a story and turning it into an image that connects with people. Sometimes that might be through humour, sometimes nostalgia and sometimes simply because the subject is something I love.
The illustrations featured in From Lens to Line reflect that variety. They show the more playful and imaginative side of my work and demonstrate how my creative process can move from traditional drawing and sketching to digital illustration using my Huion Kamvas and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Although the techniques may be different, the idea behind the work remains the same — Tell a Story with an Image.
That's really what connects everything in From Lens to Line. Whether I'm standing behind a camera looking for an interesting composition, working with a palette knife on a Scottish landscape, or creating an Arttoon illustration, I'm always looking for a way to communicate an idea through an image.
Illustration has been part of my creative journey for many years, and it's something I continue to enjoy exploring. From my own Arttoons and characters to fan art inspired by films, music, television and popular culture, there's always another idea waiting to be drawn.
From Lens to Line is a celebration of those different creative paths — from the lens of the camera to the line of the illustration.
And ultimately, that's what Arttoon is all about:
Big, Bold and Beautiful images that tell a story.
