Reworking The World of Roald Dahl Mural – East Kilbride Arts Centre

Originally created in 2015, The World of Roald Dahl mural at East Kilbride Arts Centre has remained a distinctive and much-loved feature within the space. Inspired by the imagination, humour, and slightly mischievous spirit of Roald Dahl’s storytelling, the mural was designed to bring a sense of narrative play and visual excitement into the arts centre environment.

The original work was created in an outdoor setting, painted in the garden using a combination of spray paint and acrylic. Working in this way allowed for a more dynamic and immediate approach—layering bold aerosol marks with the control and detail of acrylic painting. The result was a vibrant, energetic piece that reflected both the chaos and charm of Dahl’s fictional worlds.

The recent rework provided an opportunity to revisit the mural after several years, refining and refreshing the composition while respecting its original intent. Rather than replacing what was there, the focus was on strengthening clarity, enhancing colour relationships, and bringing renewed depth to the imagery. This process allowed the mural to evolve naturally, maintaining its storytelling core while benefiting from a decade of artistic development and experience.

Now reinstalled within the arts centre, the mural carries a renewed presence. The combination of spray paint energy and acrylic detail remains central to its character, but the updated surface treatment and refinements give it greater cohesion and impact. It continues to invite viewers into Dahl’s world of imagination, while also standing as a record of how artwork can grow and be reinterpreted over time without losing its original voice.
