The Tartan Puffer and Portwey
The Tartan Puffer and Porwey is a cheeky, cheerful tribute to two icons of maritime history—the beloved Clyde Puffer and the legendary Lady Portwey, the world’s last coal-fired tugboat. Reimagined in my signature Arttoon style, this fun-filled painting is bursting with colour, character, and classic nautical nonsense.
Set against the unmistakable backdrop of the London skyline, our tartan-clad steamer chugs proudly down the Thames, leaving a trail of coal smoke and comedy in its wake. A police speedboat zooms past in hot pursuit of who-knows-what (or who!), adding a dash of drama to the river scene. Meanwhile, in the foreground, a little dinghy bobs merrily along, seemingly caught up in the chaos.
The crew aboard the Tartan Puffer are clearly up to no good—or at least having a thoroughly good time—with scenes of classic japery unfolding on deck. From flying boiler suits to flapping gulls, every inch of the painting invites a second look and a hearty chuckle.
This is a joyful celebration of heritage and humour, where tradition meets mischief and even the most stoic of tugboats gets to let off some steam!
