Proposal for a Dynamic Project called Art for Every Heart

Creative Practice Statement

I am Neil G Smith, an artist driven by a lifelong passion for visual storytelling and expression. With a background in Graphic Design and an enduring love for drawing and painting, my creative practice serves as both a form of escapism and a way to connect deeply with others through art.

Early Inspirations

My journey into art began with the vivid and dynamic world of comic strips and illustrations. Growing up, the pages of The Beano, The Broons, Oor Wullie, and the extraordinary universes of 2000AD, Mad, DC Comics, and Marvel sparked my imagination. These iconic works instilled in me a love for bold lines, captivating characters, and visual storytelling. One of my proudest achievements was creating the End Papers for The Beano’s 2001 and 2003 editions, a dream realised that underscored the joy of blending creativity with meaningful projects.

Art for Every Heart

Central to my creative practice is the belief that art should be accessible, inclusive, and above all, enjoyable. Whether teaching private or local authority-led art classes, I strive to create environments where creativity is celebrated as a universal language. These classes emphasise art’s ability to foster connection, inspire joy, and build confidence, regardless of age, ability, or background. This commitment aligns with my core philosophy: art is not a privilege but an essential avenue for expression and interaction.

A Spectrum of Practice

My creative work spans from teaching and workshops to more intricate commissions. Each piece, whether created for an individual or a gallery, is infused with texture, illumination, and the same vibrancy that inspired me in my youth. My artwork is showcased across Scotland in galleries and private collections, reflecting a balance between personal expression and community engagement.

Nature as a Muse

The natural world has always been a profound source of inspiration in my practice. Working ‘en plein air’ is a cherished part of my process, whether capturing the tranquil beauty of the Scottish countryside or the rugged coastlines of Cornwall. These experiences have shaped my connection with landscapes and provided opportunities to refine my techniques. A notable milestone was my participation in Sky Landscape Artist of the Year, where I brought my vision to a wider audience and challenged myself to create within a competitive framework.

From Canvas to Corporate

Beyond traditional mediums, I often engage in live events, corporate settings, and fairs, blending entertainment with art through caricatures and comic strips. These sessions allow me to connect directly with people, sharing in their joy and wonder while translating their personalities onto paper. This interactive element is a cornerstone of my practice, emphasising the human connection that art fosters.

Creative Values

My creative philosophy is built on three pillars: inclusivity, engagement, and storytelling. I believe art should resonate with everyone, regardless of their experience or expertise. Whether teaching foundational techniques, working on ambitious commissions, or sketching comic-style caricatures at a bustling event, my goal is to spark imagination and ignite a sense of wonder.

Looking Forward

As my practice continues to evolve, I remain committed to exploring new forms of creative expression and engaging broader audiences. Projects like Art for Every Heart exemplify this vision, focusing on community involvement, accessibility, and innovation. These endeavours align with my desire to create art that inspires, connects, and transcends boundaries, leaving a lasting impact on both individuals and communities.

By merging my early inspirations, passion for teaching, and love of nature and storytelling, my creative practice stands as a testament to the transformative power of art. It is an ever-evolving journey, fuelled by the belief that creativity is a light that can illuminate, unite, and inspire.

Art for Every Heart

A comprehensive initiative aimed at creating and exhibiting artwork across diverse venues—ranging from galleries and art fairs to shopping centres, industrial spaces, and even abandoned places. This project will bring art to life in unexpected settings, allowing audiences to explore the intricate details and vibrant textures of creations that vary from small 5x7" pieces to grand street art on expansive walls.

The Art

Workshops will explore the full spectrum of visual art, starting with the basics of drawing and painting before advancing to street art and large signature pieces. Participants will use both dry and wet mediums, beginning with pencil, pastel, and charcoal, then progressing to brushes, watercolours, acrylics, oils, and spray cans.

Workshops will encourage artists to start with reference materials while promoting introspection and self-expression. Participants will create art inspired by their personal experiences and the unique characteristics of their local area.

The final creations will be displayed in immersive environments, celebrating artistic expression in diverse locales—from Ayrshire's and Inverclyde's rugged coastline to the industrial heartlands of North and South Lanarkshire. These four key areas will shape and inspire the artistic endeavours.

Workshops with a Vision

Each workshop will revolve around the theme of Tapestry and Diversity of Scotland. By tapping into Scotland’s multifaceted identity, the project will celebrate the nation’s diverse cultural threads. Participants will:

  • Discover art as a therapeutic medium, fostering emotional well-being alongside creative expression.

  • Explore a range of artistic techniques tailored to their needs and interests.

  • Engage in mobile workshops set up in community spaces across urban and rural Scotland, such as:

    • Largs: Community Spaces

    • Greenock: The Oak Mall

    • East Kilbride: Centre West and Westcoast Storage

    • Hamilton: Regent Mall

    • Bellshill & Motherwell: Community Spaces

    •

The workshops will be accessible, inclusive, and designed to bring people of all ages and backgrounds into the world of art.

Exhibitions and Engagement

  1. Exhibitions: Curated displays in established art galleries will provide a prestigious platform to showcase these creations, highlighting the stories behind each piece.

  2. Art Fairs: Engaging spaces at art fairs will allow participants to connect directly with a broader audience and share their work in vibrant settings.

  3. Open Spaces: Temporary exhibitions in shopping centres, industrial areas, or unexpected venues will inject creativity into daily life, transforming these spaces into immersive artistic experiences.

Lasting Legacy

This initiative aims to empower individuals by unlocking the therapeutic benefits of artistic expression. Workshops will provide tools and knowledge, encouraging participants to continue their artistic journeys independently.

Beyond individual growth, the project fosters community connections, builds lasting relationships, and promotes cross-sector collaborations that could inspire future creative initiatives. By bringing Art for Every Heart to these four areas across Scotland, the project celebrates art’s power to transform, unite, and heal.

Creating Excitement Through Participation

Workshops will empower participants to create art inspired by their own experiences, fostering pride and ownership. Collaborative projects, like murals, will encourage teamwork, while the therapeutic benefits of art will offer a safe space for connection.

Showcasing Local Talent

Exhibitions in public spaces will celebrate participants' creations, drawing diverse audiences. Interactive elements like artist interviews and live demonstrations will deepen connections.

Pop-Up Workshops and Events

Pop-up workshops in locations like shopping malls or markets will engage new audiences and promote larger events, breaking down barriers to art participation.

Engaging Audiences Digitally

Livestreamed workshops, online galleries, and interactive digital features will connect remote audiences, expanding the project’s reach beyond physical boundaries.

Collaborating with Schools and Youth Groups

Collaborations with schools and youth groups will introduce younger generations to art, with tailored workshops fostering creativity. Including their work in exhibitions will inspire pride and engagement.

Celebrating Community Through Art

The theme of Diversity of Scotland will resonate by reflecting local stories and culture, fostering belonging. Exhibitions will encourage interaction, creating inclusive spaces.

Sustaining Engagement

Online forums and follow-up projects will ensure lasting impact, keeping communities connected and inspired. Future collaborations will extend the project’s legacy, celebrating art’s power to unite and uplift.

Encouraging participants to explore their creativity, guiding them through challenges, and celebrating their progress will solidify my ability to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

As the project coordinator, I will also develop leadership qualities, including effective delegation, problem-solving, and decision-making. These skills will prepare me to lead larger-scale initiatives in the future, ensuring that I can manage both the creative and logistical aspects of community-focused art projects.

Priorities

Project priorities are Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion; Sustainable Development; Fair Work; and International.

If you consider that your project or activity particularly meets one or more of these priorities, please describe how below.

The Art for Every Heart project is designed to resonate deeply with Creative Scotland’s long-term strategic priorities, particularly in the areas of Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion, Sustainable Development, and Fair Work. This initiative is not only a celebration of creativity but also a conscious effort to use art as a tool for positive social change, ensuring that the project embodies these values at every stage of its delivery.

Equalities, Diversity, and Inclusion

At its core, Art for Every Heart is rooted in the principle of inclusivity. The project is designed to reach individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that art is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, socio-economic status, or geographic location.

  1. Geographic Accessibility: By hosting workshops and exhibitions across rural and urban areas, such as Largs, East Kilbride, and Bellshill, the project actively addresses regional disparities in access to cultural activities. This approach ensures that communities outside traditional cultural hubs are not excluded.

  2. Cultural Representation: The theme of Tapestry and Diversity of Scotland encourages participants to draw inspiration from their personal experiences and local environments. This allows the project to celebrate Scotland’s rich multicultural identity while giving voice to under represented groups.

  3. Removing Barriers: Workshops and pop-up events will be offered at little to no cost, with flexible formats designed to accommodate participants of varying skill levels and abilities. For example, adaptive tools and techniques will be employed to include individuals with physical or cognitive challenges, ensuring no one is left behind.

By creating inclusive spaces for creative expression, Art for Every Heart not only promotes equality but also fosters a sense of belonging and community cohesion among participants.

Sustainable Development

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of Art for Every Heart, reflecting a commitment to minimizing environmental impact while maximizing community benefit.

  1. Eco-friendly Practices: Wherever possible, the project will prioritise the use of sustainable materials, such as recycled paper, non-toxic paints, and reusable workshop supplies. This will reduce waste and set an example for participants about the importance of eco conscious creativity.

  2. Revitalising Underused Spaces: By utilising disused buildings, industrial spaces, and shopping centres for exhibitions, the project breathes new life into these areas while reducing the need for purpose-built venues. This approach aligns with sustainable urban development principles by repurposing existing infrastructure.

  3. Local Sourcing: Materials, services, and refreshments for workshops and events will be sourced locally, reducing the carbon footprint of transportation while supporting small businesses within the community.

  4. Encouraging Environmental Awareness Through Art: Workshops will incorporate themes of environmental conservation, inviting participants to reflect on Scotland’s natural beauty and ecological challenges. This could include creating pieces inspired by the rugged Ayrshire coastline or exploring the relationship between industry and nature in Lanarkshire.

By embedding sustainability into its operations and artistic themes, the project contributes to a broader cultural shift toward environmental responsibility.

Fair Work

The principles of Fair Work are integral to Art for Every Heart, ensuring that everyone involved in the project is treated with respect, receives fair compensation, and works in a safe, supportive environment.

  1. Fair Pay: All artists, facilitators, and coordinators will be compensated in line with Creative Scotland’s guidance on fair remuneration. This commitment underscores the value of creative labour and ensures that those contributing their skills and expertise to the project are financially supported.

  2. Inclusive Employment: The project will actively seek to hire individuals from under represented groups, including people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This approach ensures that employment opportunities are accessible to all.

  3. Supportive Work Environment: Clear communication, regular check-ins, and opportunities for professional development will create a positive and equitable working environment for all team members. Flexible scheduling and accommodations will also be provided to meet individual needs.

By upholding Fair Work principles, the project not only supports the creative workforce but also sets a standard for ethical employment practices within the arts sector.

Alignment with Long-Term Strategic Priorities

Through its focus on equality, sustainability, and fair work, Art for Every Heart aligns seamlessly with Creative Scotland’s vision for a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking creative sector.

  1. Empowering Communities: The project empowers individuals to explore their creativity, fostering a sense of agency and confidence. By bringing art into everyday spaces, it dissolves barriers between the arts and the public, creating new opportunities for connection and engagement.

  2. Creating Lasting Impact: The skills and relationships developed during the workshops will have a lasting impact on participants and communities. Individuals will gain not only artistic knowledge but also an appreciation for the value of collaboration and self-expression.

  3. Championing Equity and Diversity: By amplifying the voices of marginalised groups and celebrating Scotland’s cultural diversity, the project contributes to a more equitable creative landscape.

  4. Encouraging Sustainable Practices: The project’s commitment to sustainability ensures that its impact on the environment is as positive as its impact on communities.

Future Potential

The lessons learned during Art for Every Heart will inform my future projects, enabling me to expand its reach and deepen its impact. For example, I plan to explore opportunities to engage with national audiences, potentially bringing Scotland’s tapestry of stories and art to a UK wide stage, or even European.

Additionally, the collaborative relationships formed during the project—with participants, local organisations, and fellow creatives—will lay the groundwork for future initiatives that continue to prioritise inclusivity, sustainability, and fairness.

Art for Every Heart embodies the values and priorities set forth by Creative Scotland. Through its commitment to Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion, Sustainable Development, and Fair Work, the project creates a blueprint for meaningful, community centred creative engagement. By empowering individuals, revitalising spaces, and championing fairness, the initiative not only addresses immediate cultural needs but also contributes to a long-term vision of a more equitable and sustainable creative sector in Scotland.

Managing Funds

Tell us about your experience of and approach to managing public funds.

Managing public funds for my art classes has been a meticulous and strategic process, reflecting my commitment to transparency, accountability, and maximising impact. This approach has been particularly crucial in navigating the challenges posed by limited public funding and the unprecedented difficulties brought on by the present financial climate. For my art classes at East Kilbride Art Centre, I have always ensured that resources are allocated thoughtfully to enhance the overall experience for participants.

Securing financial support from Creative Scotland during the lockdown was a pivotal moment that allowed me to sustain and expand my artistic endeavours in innovative ways. The funds provided were utilised judiciously, with a clear focus on enhancing my working practice.

One of the key strategies was investing in technology and online platforms to transition my private classes to a digital format. This shift allowed for continued interaction with participants, fostering creativity and connection despite physical distancing measures.

The emphasis was not only on meeting immediate needs but also on laying the groundwork for future growth and community impact. The financial assistance from Creative Scotland became a lifeline during a challenging period, enabling innovation and resilience in adapting to the evolving landscape of art.

In summary, my management of public funds has been marked by strategic planning, responsible allocation, and a focus on sustainability, ensuring that every resource contributes meaningfully to the artistic and community goals of my projects.
