The Tartan Puffer is a cartoon character based on a Clyde Puffer boat and its hardworking crew. His name is Tuffy, and in his magical world he is still chugging along the West Coast of Scotland today! If you’re lucky, you might see him puffing away on the waves.
 
A long time ago, Clyde Puffers were super important. They carried food, tools, and other supplies to small villages by the sea. These villages didn’t have roads like we do today, so the Puffer boats were like floating delivery trucks!
 
Puffers had a special design—unlike other boats, they had flat bottoms. This helped them do something really clever! When they reached a bay, they would drop their anchor and wait for low tide. As the water went down, the Puffer would gently rest on the shore without getting damaged. Then, the crew would hurry to unload all the supplies before the tide came back in.
 
The name “Puffer” comes from the funny puff-puff-puff noise their engines made! These little boats worked hard to help people, and even today, Tuffy is still out there, puffing along the coast.
